My flatmates and I booked our tickets to Fuerteventura back in September, just a few weeks after arriving in Spain. Chelsea wanted to go for her birthday, so we´ve been planning this trip for a while. Just as so many of our travels are dictated by the cities to which RyanAir (the super-cheap, student-friendly airline in Europe) flies, we chose Fuerteventura for that reason. It´s one of the seven islands that make up the Canary Islands, located off the west coast of Africa and just above the equator.
The Canary Islands are known for being a major vacation spot, thanks to the year-round good weathe. Unfortunately, it rained the entire weekend. However, we did find plenty of fun things to do, including a volcano tour (since the islands were formed by volcanoes and supposedly contain the ´Entrance to Hell´), a spa (where we found an excellent deal and only paid $15 each for the use of several pools, saunas, and lounge areas), and lots of restaurants (highlights included the fresh seafood).
The most entertaining part of the weekend, though, was the people-watching. We kept forgetting that we were technically still in Spain, because no one spoke Spanish and I don´t think we even saw any Spaniards. The overwhelming majority of the people were sunburnt, obese, British couples on vacation or enjoying retirement. I think there is much more diversity on other islands and even in other towns on Fuerteventura, but in the resort town where we stayed, those were the majority of the people we encountered. It was rather entertaining.
Next adventure: London! Thirteen days and counting...
